This Junior Chess Club was formed to help young players in the area learn the game, and develop their skills.
The club started with just 9 members, and rapidly grew to over 30.
Members had been as young as 4 years old.
The young players were coached by Ray Dolan.
Their skills were then independently assessed.
Once their skills meet the required standard, each member was awarded a certificate.
As their skills develop, players were encouraged to enter regional and national junior tournaments.
The club was founded on 20 April 2004, and was believed to be unique:
It was entirely funded (and the sets etc provided) by the Church and its local parishoners.
Because of this generosity, there was no membership fee.
