St John's Junior Chess Club

This club has been dormant since January 2007
A club set up specifically to encourage young players..

The club met in High St, Walsall Wood.

This Junior Chess Club was formed to help young players in the area learn the game, and develop their skills.  The club started with just 9 members, and rapidly grew to over 30.  Members had been as young as 4 years old.

The young players were coached by Ray Dolan.  Their skills were then independently assessed.  Once their skills meet the required standard, each member was awarded a certificate.  As their skills develop, players were encouraged to enter regional and national junior tournaments.

The club was founded on 20 April 2004, and was believed to be unique:  It was entirely funded (and the sets etc provided) by the Church and its local parishoners.  Because of this generosity, there was no membership fee.

This photograph (taken in early 2005) shows some of the members of St John's chess club.  Ray can be seen top right.
