Newcastle have been involved in the League run by the North Staffordshire and District Chess Association since 1950/51.

Starting as Penkhull Church chess club, some time between 1983 and 1986, they changed to their current name of Newcastle chess club.

WDCL records list a win for Penkhull chess club in the same year that Electra won the Trophy section. The Penkhull team would have consisted of four players with a total grade under 410.
