Inter County Bulldogs Team (U120) 2011/12

Team Captain: Peter Evans

MCCU Inter-Counties Under-120 Championship

Bulldogs 6 - 6 Warwickshire
Match played 11 February 2012 at Bushbury, Wolverhampton

Saturday saw Staffordshire Bulldogs play Warwickshire in the U120 Championship at Bushbury Chess Club.  The match was played in a good spirit with many of the players from both sides knowing each other from playing in the Birmingham League.

Unfortunately one Warwickshire player missed his lift and another failed to show giving the Bulldogs a 2 point start.  This was increased to four with quick wins by Geoff Cox and John Carr.  Warwickshire pulled back on board 10 and Mike Savin drew on board 9.  Simon Jones lost to Warwickshire's experienced board 6 and Paul Guest succumbed to visiting skipper's passed pawn.  Getting tighter, but slightly easier for the Bulldogs when the top two boards were drawn. Barry Lewis secured the draw for the bulldogs.  After a tactical game, both players retained their Queens, Barry had passed pawns on the queens-side, but his opponent had a bishop to force a perpetual check.

All on the last board, which continued for an hour after the rest had finished.  Danny Torbica pressed hard and achieved past pawns but he ran out of material and was forced to resign giving a drawn match.

Congratulations to all players and a special thanks to Bushbury secretary Phil Stayley for his assistance.

Peter.

Bulldogs 5½ - 6½ Worcestershire
Match played 7 January 2012 at Bushbury, Wolverhampton

My game was one of the last to finish, but anecdotes from some of the other players indicated tight games that might have gone the other way if... With just board 10 still playing, the score was all square 5½ - 5½.  That last game went right down to a three pawns v two face off.  Opposing pawns locked together on the queens knight file, a black pawn on h6, a white pawn on g4.  The kings faced each other mid board and black's past pawn standing on d5.  White played really well, but that past pawn made all the difference.

As I put this page together, I noticed that half of the Worcestershire team came from one club - Redditch.  But as Peter Evans mentioned to me recently, captains tend to ask players at their own club first simply because they see them so often etc.

One point made the difference but well done to all the players.
Andrew

Lincolnshire 5 - 7 Bulldogs
Match played 15 October 2011 at Thurmaston, Leics.

Peter could only raise 10 players, so the match started with Lincolnshire having a 2 point advantage.  There were no youngsters among the Bulldogs, but as I run the junior part of this site as well, I was pleased to see 4 youngsters as part of the Lincolnshire team.

One by one the games finished.  Simon Jones can be a formidable opponent, but young James from Lincolnshire held him to a draw.  In my case I went a pawn up early on, but an absent minded move from me a little later allowed my opponent to level the material again.  The game finished with an impassible pawn wall keeping the kings separated - ensuring a draw.

With just Nigel Parker and Mike Savin to finish, Barry Lewis told me the Bulldogs were on 6 points - we needed half a point to secure the win.  Mike lost, but with Nigel having a knight and pawn advantage, his opponent conceeded the game.

Well done to the Bulldogs and good chess to the players from Lincolnshire.
