Inter County Terriers Team (U120) 2009/10
Team Captain: Paul Clapham.
MCCU Inter-Counties Under-120 Championship
Warwickshire 6½ - 5½ Terriers
Match played 13 March 2010 at Quinborne Community Club, Quinton, Birmingham
Match report by Paul Clapham:
Staffs Terriers travelled to Birmingham today to play Warks.
Unfortunately we were a board short due to illness and on arrival we found we were outgraded on all boards, with Warks outgrading our top board on their board 8.
It was obviously going to be a tough afternoon for the Terriers.
Warks took an early lead 2½ to ½ and we were struggling to come to even terms on the scoresheet.
We found ourselves 5½ to 3½ down with 3 games to play, just 3 wins from the last boards and we could snatch the match.
To their credit our last 3 boards gained 2 points but meant we lost again by the narrowest of margins 6½ to 5½.
The wins for the Terriers came from Pete Shaw and Paul Clapham of the Newcastle chess club and Steve Emmerton of Fenton chess club.
The last win of the day went to Karol Gryzbowski of Cheddleton chess club, Karol has had an outstanding season as top board for the Terriers.
My thanks to all the players and Pauline Woodward the Warks captain.
It seems a shame that our position in the Midlands Division does not do justice to the way the Terriers have played this season.
The team has found itself outgraded on most of the boards all season and sometimes as today on all of them but we have always been only one result away from gaining some points from the match.
Next season I think the Terriers will be a force to be reckoned with.
This is my last season as Staffs Terriers captain and I would like to thank all the players and people who have supported me.
Regards
Paul Clapham

Terriers 5½ - 6½ Nottinghamshire
Match played 20 February 2010 at Newcastle Bridge Club, Newcastle-under-Lyme
Match report by Paul Clapham:
Another close match for the Terriers against Notts, with the Terriers losing by the closest of margins.
Wins for Karl Walklate of Fenton Chess Club, Danny Torbica of Cannock St Mary’s Chess Club, Derrick Jones and Richard Mansell both of Newcastle Chess Club took the match to a tense finish.
With two games left to finish the score was tied at 5 each.
Unfortunately the Terriers could only pick up another half-point and lost by the narrowest of margins 6½ to 5½.
We now look forward to the match against Warks on the 13th March.
My thanks to the players, Ric Dawson the Notts Captain and John Day, who set up the room and boards.
Regards Paul Clapham

Leicestershire 7 - 5 Terriers
Match played 16 January 2010 at Hoby village hall, Melton Mowbray
Match report by Paul Clapham:
The fixture Leics v Staffs Terriers went ahead today at the Village Hall at Hoby, Leics.
The bad weather of the past couple of weeks and a boiler failure at the original venue looked as though they might jeopardise the fixture.
Cyril Johnson, the Leics Captain, relocated the fixture, at short notice, to the very pleasant Village Hall at Hoby and thankfully the weather improved or perhaps I should just say that most of the snow went.
Leics had a very strong team outgrading us on every board and we were unfortunately one player short so had to default board 12.
Carl Mustafa, from Fenton Chess Club, got us off to a good start with a win on board 9, putting us back on even terms.
Karol Gryzbowski, from Cheddleton Chess Club, playing board 1 gave us another win.
Karol now has a 3 wins out of 3 for this season as board 1 for the Terriers.
Dave Johnson, from Kidsgrove Chess Club, giving us our third win on board 10.
A spirited display by the Terriers but unfortunately as the final games finished Leics had the edge and won the match 7 -5.
My thanks to all the players and to Cyril Johnson, the Leics captain.
Regards Paul Clapham

Match played 14 November 2009 at Newcastle Bridge Club, Staffs.
Match report by Paul Clapham:
A very closely fought game between the two Staffordshire U120 sides, was narrowly won by the Bulldogs 6½ to 5½.
A welcome to two players from the Cannock St Marys side, Danny Torbica and Nick Crutchley.
Danny making his second appearance for the Terriers, having played for us in last year's National Quarter Finals.
Against the Bulldogs, he drew on board 3.
Nick, making his first appearance for the Terriers won on board 12.
Karol Gryzbowski, from the Cheddleton Chess Club, leading from board 1 came up with another win for the Terriers.
Karol is now 2 wins out of 2 for the Terriers on board 1.
Peter Shaw, from the Newcastle Chess Club, was our third winner on board 5.
Another match that after nearly 4 hours of chess rested on the outcome of the last game.
Thanks to all the players and Dave Buckley the Bulldogs Captain.
We now have our job cut out to try and catch the Bulldogs up in the league.
Thanks to Martyn Harris, the Newcastle Chess Club Chairman, who set up the room for the fixture.
We have to wait until the New Year for our next fixture which is away against Leicestershire on the 16 January.
Regards
Paul Clapham

Worcestershire 6 - 6 Terriers
Match played 18 October 2009 at Webheath Village Hall, Webheath, Worcestershire.
Match report by Paul Clapham:
The start of a new county season for the Terriers.
Some of our regulars from last season have now gone on to play for the U140 team, captained by John Day.
One of our star players from last season Matthew Wyza was playing top board for the U140 team a few weeks ago.
Good to welcome some newcomers to the county team.
From the Fenton club we have Karl Walklate, Richard Cantliffe and Steve Emmerton.
From the Kidsgrove club Steve Nixon.
From the Newcastle club Derrick Jones.
Dave Johnson, from Kidsgrove, making his second appearance for the county side marked it with a win.
We were outgraded on 9 of the 12 boards but Stuart Hull started us off well with an early win.
There were also wins for Karol Gryzbowski, on top board, Richard Cantliffe, Dave Johnson and myself.
As the games progressed we always maintained the edge, leading the score up to the last game.
With a nailbiting finish Worcs finally caught us up and drew the match.
My thanks to the Worcs captain Richard Turner and to all the players.
We now look forward to our next game against Staffs Bulldogs at the Newcastle Bridge Club on the 14th November.
Regards
Paul Clapham
