Inter County Terriers Team (U100 B) 2007/8
Team Captain: Traci Whitfield.
ECF National U100 Quarter finals 2007 - 8
Suffolk 7 - 5 Terriers
Match played 17 May 2008 at Leicester FC
Paul Clapham's report:
So close again, the top boards gave us a good chance to win even if only on boardcount.
Geoff did well on top board, arriving 45 minutes late because of family commitments but was the third game to finish, happily a win for Staffs.
We had to forfeit bottomboard, losing a player Saturday morning.
A good effort by all, will have to see if we can do better next year.

The scores finished level, so who went on to the next stage was decided on board-count, which gave the win to Nottinghamshire.
Well played to the Terriers, and good luck to Notts.
As losing semi-finalists, they could still qualify for the national stages.
By mutual consent, both captains agreed that rather than having a play-off, match points and game points would decide who would compete in the national stage.
Match points were level 6 - 6, so by 31½ game points to 26 in the regular season (37½ - 31 with the semi-finals), the Terriers are into the national stages as the third midlands team.

Well done everyone!
Yesterday's 7½ - 4½ win by the Terriers at Newcastle bridge club against Worcestershire gives Traci and her team the honour of finishing top in their section at the end of the regular season.
Although the Terriers and Bulldogs finish level on 6 points, the Terriers finish top because they beat the Bulldogs during the season.
As they did so well, both teams will now play a match against one of the two top teams from the East Midlands.
The winners of those two matches will go on to the national stages, and play each other for the Midlands title.
Terriers 9½ - 2½ Shrophshire B
Match played 26 January 2008 at Newcastle-under-Lyme Chess Club
Well done to Matthew from Staffordshire and praise for the 10 young players who travelled from Shropshire just for this match.
Martyn's report:
Shropshire turned up two short, so we got them to default boards 10 and 11 so that Matthew who had travelled up from the south could get a game - Robert and Carl who are both from Fenton were OK with this.
The match was fairly hard fought though one-sided - it would have been even better had Geoff Lee on top board not blundered badly in a superior position.
On the other hand Geoff Yates got out of jail because his opponent didn't realise he could sac his rook to prevent Geoffs pawn from queening, then queen one of his own, so agreed a draw.

This afternoon's U100 Inter-County fixture saw David Buckley's A team (the Bulldogs) play host to Traci Whitfield's B team (the Terriers) at Brewood.
On paper, the grades of both teams were similar, but as the result shows, the Terriers ended with a decisive win.
The score quickly went to 6 - 1, but it was almost an hour later, before David Buckley's own drawn game secured his team's fate.
Because of last minute problems raising a team, the Terriers included players from as far apart as Kidsgrove and Walsall Kipping.
Despite the results, everyone taking part seemed to have a good time.
Well done everyone!
