Inter County U-125 Team 2004/5

Yesterday Staffs Under 125 team finished their 2004/5 season with a disappointing loss to Warwickshire. This means that we reluctantly have to congratulate Warwickshire on winning the MCCU championship with one game still to play, having won 5 matches out of 5. 2nd place is still up for grabs.

There were some good wins yesterday, but the commonest post-match comment was "I could have won/forced a draw if I hadn't made one stupid move..."

Again very close: I had difficulty raising a team owing to a clash with the Wrekin Congress the same weekend, and several of our players playing there.

Also our Board 2 told me on Saturday morning that he had to go into work due to the gales bringing down cables...

It was then too late to get a replacement, hence one board defaulted.

But a good performance by the outgraded lower boards!

Congratulations to all the players who willingly missed the England v Wales match, made the 3 hour round trip to Leicester, and fought so hard (in the games played we won 7-6...)

Unfortunately Richard Wilkinson's generous offer to bring 2 Rushall players backfired when his car's electrics failed, with the result that 3 players did not arrive; even so with 5 boards left we were one ahead, but 3 defeats late in the day after some excellent endgame play on both sides virtually ended our chances. It was fortunate that the match was decided when Tony Colabella, in the last game, found himself with the dreaded K, B and N against K with 5 minutes left, and Cyril Johnson lurking ready to count the moves...
