Congresses and Tournaments in the Staffordshire area

This section includes guides to several congresses held locally.  The links on the left take you to pages giving more details about each event - when and where it is held, how many rounds and rate of play etc.  They also include details of who to contact for more information.

Congress basics

A chess congress is a tournament you enter as an individual.  Congresses are held in different parts of the country at various times of the year.  e.g. The Staffordshire Congress near Easter, or the Leek congress in September.

Entries are usually split into groups, where each group will have players of a similar grade.

During the tournament, you play opponents from your own group, and will be awarded points according to each result: 1pt for a win, ½ pt for a draw, and 0 for a loss.  As the tournament progresses, you will be matched against opponents with similar scores to your own.

You might find entry forms at chess clubs, other congresses, or on the Internet.

Junior Congress

Details of Staffordshire's Junior Congress, are included as part of the junior section of this site.
